Helen S Martin: Bio

HELEN MARTIN brings a common-sense approach to playing stringed instruments. Drawing from the pedagogy of Paul Rolland, Sheila Nelson and Irene Sharp, but especially Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory, Martin's SURE START approach secures musicality while integrating physical comfort. Studies at the New School, Philadelphia, (Brodsky) and Indiana University (Gingold), also influenced the writing of SURE START, as did Martin's experience assisting Russian pedagogues, Isaac Malkin and Michael Tseitlin in San Diego, California. Helen Martin has worked with students in both public and private schools and in conservatories here in the U.S. and in London (UK). She taught String Techniques at Moravian College and was Head of the String Department at the Community Music School in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Helen Martin’s VIDEO/DVD: VIOLIN FOR MUSICIANS received favorable reviews on MAESTRONET and in the internationally published magazine, THE STRAD. Just as we speak before we read, Helen Martin's students learn to connect the expressive, responsive aspects of music to a secure understanding of notation. Trained to teach in London, Martin draws on her European experience to offer viable class and ensemble opportunities. Since opening her Easton, Pennsylvania, studio in 2000 her students have performed works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Bartok and Shostakovitch. In addition to her Easton Studio, Helen Martin also teaches at the Eastern Conservatory in Bedminster, New Jersey
