Choosing a teacher is a tricky business. My resume` will tell you that I studied with Jasha Brodski - who taught Hilary Hahn - and Josef Gingold, Joshua Bell's teacher. So, which teacher do I mirror when I teach?
I believe that the secret of great teaching is finding the right approach for each individual. At the same time the teacher needs to understand the goals that lead to fulfillment and the process by which we grow as musicians. Adults need well-articulated technical advice. It seems easier for children to focus on the music. In the end balance is the secret but so is a teacher-student relationship that allows the student to deal with the risk of following the teacher's direction.
